COURSE OVERVIEW OF DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE (DDC 8/6)

We're miles ahead in training safe drivers

The National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course set the standard for driver improvement training with its introduction in 1964. We've trained more than 50 million drivers worldwide since then, reaching more than a million new drivers every year.

  • Our Defensive Driving Course has the highest rate of success in reducing the number and severity of collisions, and their related costs.
  • More courts, state departments of motor vehicles, municipalities, businesses, government agencies, and driving schools trust NSC for quality driver improvement training.
  • It's one of the few driver improvement programs that offers consistent quality and content nationwide.
  • NSC's Research and Statistics team identifies the leading causes of death, injury, and collisions – then we design our training to help drivers avoid those situations.
  • We keep our instructors up to date on the latest developments in traffic law and automobile technology.

The original Defensive Driving Course, recognized by the State of Missouri as an offender education program in lieu of points, is recommended by DMV's throughout the country. First introduced in 1964, this course has become the industry standard. Studies have shown that participation in a DDC program can dramatically reduce violations and collision rates. This 8 hour program involves step-by-step training for the adult learner who has had one or two traffic offenses within a three year period.

Taught by a nationally certified instructor, the content of this course includes the definition of defensive driving and preventable collisions, hazard recognition and dealing with driving conditions. Emphasis is placed on using occupant safety devices and analyzing driving choices and consequences.

Using audio-visual presentations and participant guides, student offenders are led through sessions of training in personal responsibility and choosing safe and legal behaviors when behind the wheel of their vehicles. Up-to-date information and specific defensive driving techniques are presented in an easy to understand format. Some of the topics included in this course are:

  • car phone safety
  • occupant restraints
  • ABS brakes
  • impaired driving
  • fatigue/drowsiness

The objectives to be learned and adopted are recognizing the common types of driving errors that contribute to collisions and determining safe alternatives to unsafe behaviors.
